Choose plastic container labels by matching the adhesive to the container’s resin, the label’s flexibility to the package’s movement, and the finished construction to its use conditions. Test a printed sample on the actual container before approving production.

A rigid jar, a polypropylene tub and a squeezable bottle can require different specifications. Start with the package supplier’s material details and explain how the container will be filled, labelled and handled.

Identify the plastic before selecting the adhesive

Ask the packaging supplier for the resin, exact container reference and any surface treatment or coating. Identify the body and lid separately if both will carry labels. Photographs explain shape and placement, but cannot establish the material specification.

Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are low-surface-energy plastics. Adhesive can have difficulty spreading into sufficient contact with these surfaces. Specially formulated adhesives are available, and changes in plastic formulation can affect surface energy. These general principles appear on printed page 3 of 3M’s adhesion guide.

For a PE bottle or PP tub, ask whether the proposed adhesive is suitable for that specific container. Successful attachment to glass does not establish compatibility with your plastic package.

Keep the container material and label material separate in the brief. “PP container” describes the surface receiving the label; it does not specify the label face or adhesive.

Match flexibility to bottle movement

The complete label construction includes its printable face material, adhesive, printing and any protective coating or laminate. Ask the supplier to review these together for a squeezable package.

Conformability describes how well a label follows a surface’s shape. Avery Dennison distinguishes semi-conformable films for slight compound curves from fully conformable films for more complex bottle shapes and squeeze applications. Its conformable-film guidance provides a useful starting point for that discussion.

Explain whether the package stays rigid, flexes slightly when gripped or is repeatedly squeezed to dispense its contents. Include the actual bottle in sample assessment rather than judging flexibility from a loose label.

Keep fit checks practical

Record the usable label panel between seams, ribs, shoulders and changes in contour. State dimensions explicitly in millimetres or inches when briefing teams in the US, Canada or UK.

Try a paper template at the proposed finished size. Check that it sits naturally on the filled, closed container and does not interfere with opening or gripping. Have the printer review the outline if the container tapers or the template wrinkles.

A paper template checks approximate fit; it cannot prove adhesion or squeeze performance. Keep detailed artwork preparation separate, following the printer’s specifications and the sticker artwork preparation guide.

Separate application conditions from later use

Minimum application temperature is the lowest recommended temperature during labelling. Service temperature concerns the recommended range after application. Avery Dennison explains this distinction in its cold-temperature label overview. Use the definitions to frame your enquiry; obtain specifications for the actual proposed construction.

Applying a label to a dry bottle before refrigeration is a different requirement from applying it to a cold bottle carrying condensation. Describe the sequence, including:

  • Whether application occurs before or after filling.

  • The container’s surface temperature and whether it is dry or damp.

  • Expected storage temperatures, with °C or °F clearly stated.

  • Contact with product spills, moisture, rubbing or cleaning agents.

  • Whether the label must remain attached or be removed after a defined period.

Follow the selected label’s preparation and application instructions using a method compatible with the plastic. Pressure and time can improve adhesive contact, as 3M’s guide explains. Ask for the required pressure and dwell period—the waiting time before assessing the bond or exposing the package to use conditions.

Assess adhesion and squeeze performance on finished samples

Request samples made with the proposed face material, adhesive, printing and protective finish. Agree on the number of containers, observation intervals and acceptance criteria with the supplier.

The following is a practical screening routine for the package:

  1. Record the setup. Note the container reference, resin, label specification, preparation, application temperature and dwell period.

  2. Inspect the initial result. Photograph label edges, bubbles and wrinkles after the specified waiting period.

  3. Reproduce dispensing. Grip, open and squeeze the bottle as intended. Include partly emptied bottles where relevant.

  4. Add expected exposure. Assess the refrigeration, condensation, product splashes or rubbing the package will encounter.

  5. Review changes. Record edge lifting, sliding, persistent creases and loss of print readability at agreed intervals.

  6. Check removal when required. Assess residue and changes to the plastic surface after the intended attachment period.

Make acceptance criteria observable. For example, agree on a defined dispensing routine and whether visible edge lifting or unreadable instructions would count as failure. This is a proposed assessment method, not a reported customer result or certification procedure.

If a sample fails, record where and when the problem appeared. Review adhesive compatibility, flexibility, dimensions and application conditions together. A short successful trial supports only the conditions assessed.

Frequently asked questions

Will ordinary stickers stick to plastic containers?

Some combinations will work, but “plastic” is too broad a specification. Confirm the resin and assess the proposed adhesive on the exact container, especially for PE and PP.

Is vinyl always the best choice?

A face-material name alone does not resolve adhesive compatibility or squeeze performance. Ask for a recommendation covering the complete construction and your container.

Why does a label wrinkle when a bottle is squeezed?

The label may not accommodate the bottle’s movement. Review conformability, dimensions and application conditions, then compare finished samples on the same bottle. A photograph alone may not establish the cause.

Does waterproof mean dishwasher-safe?

That description alone does not establish dishwasher suitability. Request evidence covering the finished printed label, plastic container and intended washing conditions.
