Prepare vector artwork for its intended production process: confirm the finished size, keep an editable master, and create separate delivery files for print, vinyl cutting and embroidery. Printing needs agreed color and page settings; cutting needs the correct blade boundaries; embroidery needs artwork translated into stitches.
The same logo can support all three uses, but each version needs its own review at the actual output size.
Start with the finished product
Obtain the producer’s specifications before changing the artwork. For US, Canadian and UK projects, state dimensions with explicit units. For example, “4 inches wide, height proportional” can include “101.6 mm” as a reference conversion. Identify which measurement controls the job.

Keep the original logo, live text and approved color references together. Make production copies with clear revision names. If only a blurry image remains, supply the best available reference and have uncertain lettering or symbols approved before reconstruction.
Prepare the print version
Agree fonts, color and export settings
Ask whether the printer accepts embedded fonts or requires text converted to outlines. Preserve live text in the master, then proofread the delivery copy after conversion.
For process printing, confirm the requested CMYK conversion and profile; for spot inks, confirm the names and treatment of those colors. Some workflows request RGB content and handle conversion later. Follow the printer’s specification rather than applying one color setting to every job.
PDF export includes separate controls for font embedding, color conversion, profiles and image downsampling. Use the requested settings and reopen the exported file to inspect the result. Adobe’s PDF options
Identify whether white areas represent printed white ink or uncovered material. Ask for production instructions for foil, spot coating or other finishes, and request a suitable physical proof when color or surface appearance matters.
Separate bleed from safe space
Bleed extends backgrounds beyond the intended trim edge. Use the printer’s specified allowance; Adobe advises consulting the print shop because the required amount depends on the job. Adobe’s bleed guidance
Keep essential text and logos inside the approved safe area. Allow separately for folds, frames, seams and finishing hardware. Extending a background through bleed does not protect a logo placed too close to a fold or fixing.
Check photographs at final size
Review raster images separately from vector shapes. A file containing scalable artwork can still include photographs whose available detail depends on their pixel dimensions and printed size.
Effective PPI = image width in pixels ÷ printed width in inches. A 6000-pixel-wide image printed 60 inches wide provides 100 PPI. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended minimum; obtain the producer’s target for the intended viewing conditions. Adobe’s image-size and resolution guidance
If working at an agreed reduced scale, account for enlargement. An image at 300 effective PPI in a 1:10 layout becomes 30 PPI at ten times the dimensions, assuming its pixel count remains unchanged.
Apply the checks to the printed item
Large-format signs: Record finished dimensions and file scale. Ask the producer to identify the visible area, panel joins and finishing allowances. Review essential lettering at the intended reading distance and request a full-size detail sample where needed.
Cartons and sleeves: Work on the manufacturer’s approved dieline—the flat structural template—and confirm its revision, printed side, folds and glue areas. Make a folded paper mockup to check panel orientation and hidden content. Confirm how structural guides and finish artwork should be delivered. Keep separately approved wording for different product or market versions.
Business cards: Use the exact product template and inspect both sides at actual size. Check taglines, contact details and reversed logos on dark backgrounds. Preserve brand clear space as well as the printer’s safety margin. If a tagline is too small, obtain approval for a different arrangement instead of silently changing the logo.

Prepare the vinyl-cutting version
Make boundaries match the pieces you want
For filled vinyl pieces, use closed boundaries around the material that should remain. Keep intentional drawing or scoring paths assigned to those operations rather than closing every path indiscriminately.
A thick stroke may still be a center path with a visible width. If that width must become a strip of vinyl, convert it into boundary geometry. Prepare text and masks for the receiving software. Cricut Design Space, for example, requires editable text in SVG/DXF uploads to be converted to shapes and does not support clipping paths in those uploads. Cricut’s upload restrictions
Remove duplicate boundaries and stray fragments. Check that openings inside letters remain actual openings in the imported cut preview. Confirm layers, orientation and small details
Name material layers clearly and provide a composite preview. Agree whether adjacent colors overlap or meet edge to edge, how they align, and which layer is applied first. For heat-transfer material, follow the exact product’s layering and mirroring instructions. Record who will apply any mirroring so it happens only once.
For window lettering, state both the installation side and reading direction—for example, “installed inside, readable from outside.” Have the producer confirm material suitability.
Weeding removes unwanted vinyl while leaving the design on its liner. Cricut recommends a basic test cut to check settings and specifies suitable transfer tape for its listed materials. Cricut’s vinyl instructions
As a separate artwork check, ask the operator to cut, weed and transfer a sample containing the smallest lettering, narrowest connections and tightest gaps at final size. A basic test shape does not establish that those features will handle successfully. Approve any simplification with the artwork owner.
Prepare artwork for embroidery digitizing
A vector logo is source artwork, not a completed embroidery machine file. Digitizing translates its shapes into embroidery objects and stitches. Hatch’s documentation describes converting imported vector or bitmap artwork and selecting suitable stitch types. Hatch’s digitizing guidance

Ask the digitizer to assess small lettering, thin outlines and narrow gaps at the requested size. Clear color blocks provide a useful starting point for discussing simplification. Agree which details may change and which must remain recognizable. Ask for a sew-out on representative fabric with the intended production setup, then review lettering, coverage and alignment before approving the design. Have additional sizes assessed separately rather than assuming the finished stitch file scales like the vector master.
Send a clear production handoff
Supply the requested delivery file, a reference preview and a short brief identifying:
Finished dimensions, units and any agreed file scale.
Production process, material or fabric, and placement.
Template revision, color references and orientation.
Approved design changes and the exact artwork revision.
The proof or sample still needed before production approval.
Reopen each export in the receiving workflow where possible. Compare its dimensions, wording, openings, layers and appearance with the approved reference. Tie approval to a specific revision and request an updated proof after relevant changes.

Does saving as SVG or PDF make the file ready?
