For creating embroidery from original artwork without a software purchase, start by evaluating Ink/Stitch. For editing existing stitch files, consider my editor or DIME Embroidery Tool Shed; for typing with compatible BX embroidery fonts, consider Embrilliance Express. These tools serve different purposes, so choose around your actual task. Their free capabilities are documented by Ink/Stitch, Wings Systems, DIME and Embrilliance.
A free download may be an ongoing free tool, a restricted mode or a temporary trial. Before investing time, check whether it can save your work in the machine format you need and which features remain available without payment.
Choose the software category first
The main distinction is whether you already have embroidery stitches or need to create them from artwork.

Likewise, a font installer is different from a machine embroidery file: Embrilliance uses BX files to install fonts and other assets, then saves the resulting embroidery separately. Free embroidery software options
Ink/Stitch with Inkscape: creating original embroidery
Ink/Stitch is a free, open-source embroidery platform based on Inkscape. It offers multiple stitch types, lettering, thread management and machine-file output. Installation options cover Windows, macOS and Linux. Ink/Stitch overview and installation guidance.
This is a useful starting point if you want to learn how artwork becomes embroidery. Its vector workflow means you will work with paths and nodes as well as embroidery settings. Allow time to learn both parts; importing a graphic is only the beginning of preparing a stitchable design.
Ink/Stitch includes embroidery fonts and learning resources, so the older claim that it lacks useful lettering options is misleading. Its documented features also include stitch-level editing of imported embroidery and batch export. Ink/Stitch features.
Keep the editable SVG working file when exporting. Ink/Stitch opens existing embroidery files in Manual Stitch Mode, which provides individual stitch editing rather than restoring all the original digitizing objects. Import and export documentation.
DIME Embroidery Tool Shed: basic adjustments and software evaluation
DIME identifies Embroidery Tool Shed as free software and documents resizing as a free capability. Its download page provides Windows and macOS options. Check the installation requirements for your computer before downloading. DIME FAQ and official downloads.
Tool Shed also houses separately purchased DIME products and their demonstrations. Access to a demo does not mean its tools are permanently free: DIME says those demonstrations allow feature exploration but do not save designs. Embrilliance Express: lettering with BX fonts
Embrilliance Express is a free mode of the Embrilliance Platform for Windows and macOS. It lets you type with installed BX embroidery fonts and save supported BE designs into machine stitch formats. You can enter Express mode by continuing without a serial number. Official Express FAQ.
Its limits matter: Express cannot resize designs or merge your lettering with other stitch files. Those tasks require additional capabilities. Do not confuse Express with a demonstration that disables saving. Express mode limits.
Choose it when your main job is preparing names or words using compatible embroidery fonts. Check each font’s supplied sizes, characters and usage terms; free software does not mean every font is free.
my editor: viewing and editing existing stitch files
Wings Systems describes my editor as a free viewer and editor. Its tools include individual stitch changes, rotation, resizing, copy-and-paste merging, thread palettes, stitch simulation, printouts and saving to supported embroidery formats. It suits work that begins with an existing embroidery file. The manufacturer’s published operating-system list runs through Windows 10, so confirm compatibility before relying on it on a newer computer. Although the program advertises density adjustment during resizing, inspect and test the result rather than assuming every size change will sew successfully.
StitchBuddy: a restricted free option for Mac users
StitchBuddy’s developer listing describes editing, conversion, printing and Finder preview support. Free saving is restricted to designs with no more than 1,000 stitches, and text creation and SVG import are also limited. Treat it as a restricted option when deciding whether it covers your projects. StitchBuddy’s Mac App Store listing.
The same listing states that resizing does not adjust stitch count. This distinction matters when comparing it with software that recalculates stitches: changing the dimensions alone changes their spacing.
Organization tools and older recommendations
2stitchOrganizer now has a paid subscription
2stitchOrganizer provides design previews, size and stitch information, tagging and search on Windows and macOS. Those remain useful organization features, but the current product is offered with a seven-day trial followed by a subscription. Current product overview and subscription information.
The developer explains that the original free version has been replaced and that its website no longer offers version 1.x downloads. It should therefore no longer appear as an ongoing free recommendation. 2stitchOrganizer FAQ.
BERNINA ARTlink: distinguish documentation from availability
BERNINA’s ARTlink 9 workbook describes opening designs, converting formats, resizing, rotating, mirroring, assigning colors and printing templates. It places combining designs, digitizing artwork and adding lettering in the more advanced software category. BERNINA’s ARTlink workbook.
That workbook is useful for understanding an existing installation. Before planning a new setup around ARTlink 8 or 9, confirm current download and activation availability directly with BERNINA; an older manual does not establish that a free installer remains available.
Embroidermodder: an experimental project
The official Embroidermodder repository identifies version 2 as an alpha under construction and advises waiting for the release before serious use. It belongs in an experimental category, rather than a beginner’s production shortlist. Embroidermodder project status.
How to select software for your machine and computer
Begin with one representative task: preparing a name, adjusting a purchased design or digitizing a simple original shape. Then evaluate the complete path from opening the file to exporting it.

Do not assume that reading a format means writing it is supported. For example, Ink/Stitch publishes separate import and export lists, with output including DST, EXP, JEF, PES and VP3. Match the export choice to your machine’s documentation. Ink/Stitch format support.
For buyers in the US, Canada and UK, label design dimensions explicitly in inches or millimeters when exchanging files. If paid software becomes necessary, compare the total in USD, CAD or GBP as applicable, including any required operating-system setup, add-ons and renewal terms.
Use an editable working file for revisions where possible, and save machine output separately. In Ink/Stitch, that means retaining the SVG alongside the exported embroidery file. Ink/Stitch saving guidance.
Before committing a garment or a batch, sew a sample at the intended dimensions using the planned fabric and setup. A preview helps inspect the design; a physical sample lets you assess the result on the material.
Embroidery software free trials
Trials can help you decide whether a paid tool saves enough effort to justify buying it. Check duration, export restrictions and the exact product level before starting a project.
Hatch Embroidery
Hatch currently offers a 30-day trial of Hatch Embroidery 4 with access to all four levels. Its trial page prominently states a 30-design export limit, although some FAQ wording on that page describes unrestricted export. SewWhat-Pro and SewArt
SewWhat-Pro focuses on viewing, editing and converting existing embroidery. SewArt focuses on creating embroidery from raster or vector artwork and includes image preparation, automated fills and manual digitizing options. Both product pages offer 30-day demonstrations. SewWhat-Pro and SewArt.
S & S Computing identifies its products as native Windows applications; using them on a Mac requires an additional compatibility setup. Check that requirement and each demo’s restrictions before evaluating them. S & S system requirements.
Embird
Embird’s demonstration period is limited to 30 days or 100 runs. Restrictions vary by module: its digitizing tools, Sfumato Stitch and Cross Stitch demonstrations have stitch limits and do not save finished designs, while font demonstrations restrict the available characters. When a digitizing service may fit better
Free software is useful when you want to learn or regularly make your own changes. For an occasional original design, compare the time needed to learn and test the software with having the artwork digitized for you.
If you use DigitEMB’s embroidery digitizing services, provide the artwork, finished dimensions, fabric, placement and required machine format. Ask which working files are included, how size changes are handled and who will perform the sample sew-out. Those details help you decide what software you still need for viewing or permitted personalization.
Frequently asked questions
Can free software turn a JPG into PES or DST?
Digitizing software can create embroidery from artwork, but a stitch-format converter works with embroidery that already exists. A JPG requires a stitch plan before machine-file export. For example, SewArt documents image preparation and stitch choices as part of that process. SewArt’s workflow.
Is Inkscape alone embroidery digitizing software?

Which free options work on a Mac?

Can Embrilliance Express combine a name with a separate logo file?
Express cannot merge its lettering with another stitch file. You need an editor with that capability. Embrilliance’s Express limits.
Can I enlarge any embroidery design without changing its quality?
Do not assume so. Resizing behavior varies: StitchBuddy, for example, retains stitch count when scaling. Review the software’s behavior and test the revised size before using it on the final item. StitchBuddy’s feature description.
